When an elderly man is found violently stabbed, wallet missing, in an alley way in a small town on the Isle of Man, all fingers point to a local boy.

The victim was well-known on the island and a member of a very distinguished family who are keen to see quick justice.

Anxious that the heightening anger of the Manx people will lead to an unwarranted arrest, the Manx police call in Inspector Littlejohn to investigate.

While the boy maintains his innocence, Littlejohn’s investigations lead him to the Bishop’s Arm pub. Harbouring some of the island’s most dubious characters, will Littlejohn find the clue among these shady figures before a possibly innocent boy is sent to jail?

The Tormentors An Inspector Littlejohn Mystery George Bellairs 9781912194094 Books

This isn't one of George Bellairs's best mysteries, but it's still a darn good whodunit. Two members of a respected Isle of Man family die within days: one stabbed and one hanged. Inspector Littlejohn of Scotland Yard is vacationing on the island as a guest of his octogenarian friend, the Archdeacon. As is often the case, Littlejohn is called in unofficially to help the local police; and, the Archdeacon smooths the way with the locals. Bellaire obviously loved the Isle of Man and his descriptions of it are beautifully detailed and read like a travelogue. You wish you were there, absent the dead Croakes.

While Superintendent Littlejohn is visiting with his friend the Archdeacon on the Isle of Manx, they become involved in the murder of a member of the local gentry. A teddy-boy, on the island for a party weekend, is charged with the crime, but Littlejohn has his doubts. Rumors are spreading about the gentleman's affair with an innkeeper’s daughter, whose father seems less than happy.
The gentleman's family are also embarrassed by the situation. They do have their reputations to uphold. And that Caretaker! I sure don't trust him!
Mr. Carstairs not only WRITES great mysteries but he envelopes you in his story. No one can describe a scene like Mr. Carstairs, whether indoors or out. So vividly does he described the Super’s drives through the countryside, you feel like you are there.
Littlejohn and his wife are visiting the Arch-Deacon on the Isle of Mann. Alf, a no-good from Liverpool arrives on the ferry where he has sort of stuck to Sid in order to get by the police, soon dumps Sid. Alf steals the wallet of an old man and soon finds himself arrested for murder when John Croake dies of a knife wound and the wallet is found on Alf. Littlejohn is asked to help investigate and soon realizes that Alf did not commit murder and the murder must have something to do with the Croake family. After John Croake's sister hangs herself, he knows the deaths are related. When his wife looks at the very valuable Meissen collections and realizes the ones on the back of the shelf are modern copies, he believes there is blackmail going on. The story is well told, and Littlejohn and the Arch-Deacon do some pretty good sleuthing. Catching the culprits at the end is a little difficult, but Littlejohn is a pro and Knell, the local cop does his part.
I’ve read most of the available books in the Inspector Littlejohn series and have become intrigued by the Isle of Man. The novels set here are my favorites in this series, although I have enjoyed every one of the books I’ve read. Bellairs describe the area so well that you can practically see it, and he reintroduces us to some familiar characters that reside there, and have appeared in other novels in the series.

The mystery in this book seems pretty straightforward at first but turns out to be quite complex. The plot is well thought out and the story is both interesting and enjoyable to read. Technically, I suppose these novels would be considered police procedurals, but they are more than that. Glimpses of the everyday lives of the characters turn them into well rounded individuals. Although Bellairs doesn’t completely shy away from violence, it is generally understated and in the background.

I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy a well written, traditional mystery.
I have enjoyed a number of the books in this series but was particularly interested in this one as it is set on the Isle of Man, where author Bellairs lived at one point in his life.

I had become fascinated with the Isle via two excellent mystery series by Diana Xarissa, one, the Aunt Bessie series set in the 1990s and her Ghostly series set in the present day.

Bellairs book is a classic, so set mid century, an earlier time, with wonderful descriptions of the landscape.

I am an ARC reader for Crime Classics and did receive this book for free, but it is one I already was interested in and it did not disappoint. This is my voluntary review.

Each Littlejohn Mystery is different, with sly humor and an excellent portrayal of characters in their time and place.

What appears at first to be a murder during a robbery gone wrong gradually develops into a very different crime with links to the past.

Littlejohn's wife is an important secondary character here, using her own expertise to uncover part of the motive.

I was pleased to have worked out where the murder actually happened early on, but the rest of the plot develops in fascinating stages, giving any mystery fan a workout re deduction.
There's an interesting, complex plot, and a lot of good Manx scenery. But the detection ends too close to farce, while most characters are unattractive.
This is my twenty-seventh book in this series and sooner or later I will try to own all of them. If that is possible, some may not be in print anymore.
Love all the characters who are so fully developed.. The description of the towns and the wording make you feel you are right there. again if you love British mysteries this is another you just have to read.
